|Mukalla Iron and Steel to start production in June
|Yemen - 2012 March 6
Yemen's Mukalla Iron and Steel intends to start hot trials at Hadramout Iron and Steel plant in June 2012. Commercial production of 8-32 mm rebar, 10-50 mm wire rod and structurals of up to 120 mm will commence in a week or two after hot testing finishes.
Noteworthy, the company postponed the launch of an electric steelmaking complex (160,000 tpy) and a bar and rod mill (500,000 tpy) multiple times, due to political instability in the country, which forced German engineers performing the pre-commissioning to leave the country. However, a company representative hopes that the situation will improve after the presidential elections.
Initially the plant was slated for commissioning in Q3 2009. SMS Group (Germany) supplied steelmaking equipment for it and Austria's Siemens VAI delivered the mill.
According to preliminary data, additional volumes of required square billet will be sourced from the Middle East (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) and India. The producer will sell its finished products primarily in the domestic market.
