Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Posco Specialty Steel Co. Ltd., a Korean special steel producer, to modernize the long-product rolling mill in its Changwon Works. The plant will be equipped with a new breakdown mill, and existing parts of the plant will be brought up to the state-of-the-art. Furthermore, new electrical and automation equipment will be installed throughput the entire production plant. The order is worth more than EUR 10 mln, and the modernization is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.

The Changwon long-product rolling mill comprises a compact cassette (CCR) rolling mill, a flat block line - both of which Siemens installed in 2004 - and a blooming mill. Within the scope of the modernization project, Siemens is supplying a reversible, single stand breakdown mill with a roll diameter of 1200 millimeters, as well as the secondary plant equipment. This includes the entry and exit tables, handling devices between the mill passes, and material transfer facilities. Shears, saws and a roll exchange system complete the scope of supply.

The breakdown mill is designed to turn out 365,000 tons per annum, and can produce a wide range of long products.

These include bar steels with diameters from 90 to 350mm, slabs with cross-sections of 200 by 1250mm, and flats ranging in thickness from 28 to 280mm and in width from 750 to 1250mm.

Siemens will also be supplying cutting saws for the CCR mill and the flat block line. All parts of the plant will be equipped with new, standardized electrical and automation equipment. Siemens will also be responsible for supervising construction and commissioning, and will provide the customer training.
