Severstal crude steel output increases by 28 pct in H1

According to a company release issued on July 26, Severstal's total production of crude steel in H1 2010 was 8.66 mln mt, 28 percent higher than in H1 2009, while its total hot metal output amounted to about 6.5 mln mt, 36 percent higher than in the same period last year.

Severstal's total sales of iron ore pellets in H1 2010 was 26 percent lower than in H1 2009, while its coal sales were up by 62 percent, to 1.255 mln mt and 3.66 mln mt respectively.

Meanwhile, during the period in question, the company's consolidated sales of rolled steel products amounted to 6.95 mln mt - up 33 percent, its sales of semi-finished products came to 408,117 mt - up 27 percent, and its sales of downstream products totaled 894,824 mt - up 18 percent, all compared to H1 2009.

Specifically, in H1 this year, Severstal Russian Steel produced 5.3 mln mt of crude steel - up 27 percent year on year, and 4.23 mln mt of hot metal, up 33 percent year on year. Severstal Russian Steel's H1 sales of rolled steel products increased by 32 percent year on year to 3.8 mln mt.

Severstal's production of hot metal in North America was 2.256 mln mt in H1 2010, which reflects a 44 percent increase year on year, while its crude steel throughput in North America was reported at about 3.35 mln mt - up 30 percent compared to H1 2009. In addition, Severstal's North American operations also reported a 32 percent increase in its sales of rolled steel products to 3.16 mln mt, but a 27 percent decrease in its downstream product (metalware) sales to 48,700 mt.
