Flat steel output rises more than 50 pct during January-May 2010 YoY

According to the information provided by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association, in the first five months of 2010 Turkey's flat steel output increased by 50.1 percent year on year, totaling 2.45 mln metric tons. Flat steel production constituted 22.23 percent of total domestic steel output in the given period, compared to 16.72 percent in the corresponding period of 2009.

Meanwhile, during the given period, the country's long steel production improved by 5.4 percent year on year, amounting to 8.56 mln metric tons. Long steel production accounted for 77.77 percent of the country's total steel production during the period in question, compared to 83.28 percent in the corresponding period of 2009.

In the January-May period of this year, Turkey produced 11 mln metric tons of steel, 12.9 percent up year on year. The production performed by electric arc furnace plants increased by 10.9 percent, while steel production using blast furnaces increased by 17.4 percent, both compared to the corresponding period of 2009. In the period in question, 68.14 percent of production came from mini-mills, with the remaining 31.86 percent coming from integrated plants.
